Gryphon Gazette: Year End Announcements
hello June

Hello Gryphon Families,

As with every year, it seems that the last few weeks of the school year have flown by. The school has been very busy as students have been enjoying year-end activities, wrapping up final culminating work, and preparing for secondary exams.

As a staff, we couldn't be more proud of the growth that we have seen in our students over the course of the year. June is always a special month as we have multiple opportunities to celebrate the wide variety of ways that our students have excelled, and we are certainly looking forward to celebrating our grade 8 and 12 students at their respective upcoming graduation ceremonies next week.

We sincerely hope that all students enjoy the last few days of the school year, and wish our secondary students best of luck on their exams. We also hope that all families enjoy a safe, restful and wonderful summer ahead, no matter the adventures that fill your days.

See you in 2026-2027!

Additional Goodbyes, Hello's and Congratulations...

This year, we have an additional goodbye to Mr. Czermak, who will be moving on as the Vice Principal at Enterprise PS next year. Mr. Czermak has been a part of the GREC and LOLPS community for the last seven years, and has not only made a positive difference in the lives of many students and families, but has been a strong advocate for the north. We will definitely miss Mr. Czermak and know that Enterprise PS is very lucky to have him.

With the departure of Mr. Czermak, we say WELCOME to Mr. McCullough as our new Vice Principal. Mr. McCullough has worked at both Sharbot Lake HS and NAEC in the past, and is coming to us most recently from Bayridge Secondary School. Mr. McCullough brings with him a strong background in special education and will definitely continue to be a strong advocate for our school and students. We are excited to have Mr. McCullough join us at GREC!

And last, but certainly not least, we are wishing a CONGRATULATIONS and goodbye to Ms. Pratt, who is retiring in June this year! Ms. Pratt has been teaching in LDSB since 2006, having taught at LaSalle Secondary, Sydenham High School, Ernestown Secondary, LCVI, and GREC over the course of her career. In all sites, she has left a positive mark, and at GREC, we have benefitted greatly from her dedication to teaching, commitment to mental health, and interest in bringing student art work to the forefront of the school and greater community. Wishing Ms. Pratt all the best in her retirement - we know you will continue to give back to the world as you move into this next chapter.

Secondary Examinations

Grade 12 students started examinations on June 16th and 17th. All remaining secondary examinations will take place June 18th onward (schedule shown below). All students are reminded that they need to return textbooks AND laptops by their last exam date.

A reminder to all secondary students:

  • Students should not be riding the bus or attending school on exam days unless they have a scheduled exam. The only exception to this is:
    • they are a student who has made arrangements to meet with a teacher
    • They are a student who has outstanding work. In this case, students should attend the school and report to the GLC to work with the success team until work is complete.
  • Early bus is available for students to use after their exam
    • Students must sign up for early bus in the main office. If no students sign up for any given day, the bus will be cancelled.
    • Students who remain at school for the afternoon and do not take an early bus must be in the library for quiet study. Students will not be permitted in the hallways or cafeteria.

CLASS PLACEMENT REQUESTS

Organizing for the upcoming school year began in early Spring. This process includes staffing, timetables and new registrations. Our planning also addresses next years’ class placements.

The creation of classes is a very complex task that takes into account many factors. When determining placements for next year we consider learning and academic needs, emotional and social needs, and class size to name a few.

We recognize that, in a few individual cases, there may be important reasons why a specific placement is necessary. In these cases, we request that you submit a written request directly to Ms. Moore by email (mooreca@limestone.on.ca) indicating the reasons for your request. The request should identify the optimal conditions for your child’s success but should not indicate a specific teacher request. We will do our best to accommodate your child’s needs but cannot guarantee specific placements. All written requests must be received no later than Friday, June 26th.

We appreciate your support and understanding in this matter. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Ms. Moore.

Parent Council

Dear Parents & Guardians,

We invite you to join our Parent Council meetings (typically on the first Monday of each month), which will take place in the GREC Library or online via Zoom from 5:30-6:30pm.

The Parent Council is a group of parents, guardians, staff, and community members who work together to support and enhance our school environment. Through these meetings, we discuss important topics, share updates, and make decisions that shape our school community.

Your insights and ideas are invaluable to us. We believe that a range of perspectives strengthens our efforts, and we would love to see more voices represented. Whether you have suggestions, or questions, or simply want to listen in, your involvement makes a real difference!

Please consider joining us. We look forward to welcoming new and returning faces.

Prevalent Medical Conditions

Schools are required to have a plan of care on site for any student with a prevalent medical condition. If your student has a prevalent medical condition, please take the time to fill out the appropriate form below and return the form to the school. Forms must be updated annually so that the school is aware of changes to plans.

If your student requires daily medications, these should NOT be carried in backpacks, but rather stored in the main office. If medications are to be administered by school staff, additional forms are required. Please reach out to the school if you have any questions, or to make arrangements for administration of medications.

Late Arrival? Early Dismissal?

As you can appreciate, the office can be very busy at the beginning and end of each day. We ask that you notify your student's teacher (Elementary; note, email) or the main office (Secondary) about changes to regular routines ahead of time wherever possible. If there are unforeseen changes, please notify the office before 1:30pm. This will allow us to relay the information to the classroom in a timely manner.

All doors of the school building remain locked during the school day. Please continue to buzz at the front door for pick ups and drop offs during the day.

Reporting a Student Absence

Reporting Absences: There are three options to use to report a student absence:

  • use the SchoolMessenger App on your phone, select "Attendance", then "Report an Absence"
  • use the SchoolMessenger website portal
  • Call the main office of the school
